How Do I Prevent My Puppy from Chewing Everything?

If you’re experiencing the frustration of having your dog or puppy chewing up your shoes or furniture you are not alone.  This is a somewhat common experience for new dog owners. To help stop this behavior here are some tips to help you.

First of all realize that many puppies may be chewing on things because they are essentially teething. This helps to reduce some of the pain associated with this process.

One ways to get your dog to stop chewing on your things is to provide alternatives for them to chew on.  These alternatives should not resemble any articles in the house that you don’t want your pet to chew on like old shoes.

Providing an old shoe for your dog to chew on might present the message that it’s okay to chew on any shoes in the house. So make sure that chew toys do not resemble any household objects.

Place these chew toys around areas where the dog has been chewing. This gives them an alternative when they need to chew on something.

To further facilitate quickly changing this negative behavior you need to correct any bad behavior when it happens right away.

Dealing correctly with  bad behavior means that the dog might not associate the punishment with the deed. So make sure you correct your dog right away, don’t wait.

In a firm voice, tell them NO and remove them from the area that he is in and give them an alternative object to chew on.
