Obviously if your dog hurt it’s foot the best thing to do is to see your veterinarian. Depending on what’s wrong with it, it should not be too expensive to fix it.
For dogs that lose a toenail or do damage to their footpads many times wrapping and forcing the dog to arrest is all that is needed to help heal it.
Sometimes however a foot problem on a dog might be caused by a problem higher up in the leg, like in the knee or hip joints.
A luxating patella, hip dysplasia, or a torn anterior cruciate ligament, might all cause signs that a dog has foot pain, when the problem is not necessarily in the foot.
Examine your dog’s paw carefully and look for any signs of cuts and scrapes that might be causing the pain.
If it is actually due to a fracture, a broken bone, a cast or plating of the affected bones might be necessary. However often in the cases of small bones in the foot all that is required to correct them is to rest your dog in order to allow them to heal.
Again the only way to definitively know what is wrong with the your dog’s foot is to have an examination done by your veterinarian. Until you can see it your vet try and make your dog rest by keeping them tethered or in a kennel to help rest their foot.
