My Dog Hurt Its Back, What Should I Do?

Depending on how severely your dog is injured it could be an emergency in which case you should see your veterinarian right away. Some dogs like dachshunds are prone to severe back problems like a prolapsed disc.

In these cases you’ll notice the dog might be in extreme pain or no pain at all and completely unable to use its hind limbs. If your dog cannot use its hind limbs at all and the injury has just happened you should see your veterinarian right away.

The longer the disk compresses the spinal cord or other nerves the smaller the chance that your dog will ever recover.

Also depending on the location of the injury you’ll see different clinical signs. If your dog injured its mid back area its legs might be very stiff and it will not be able to urinate.  However if your dog injures its lower back the hind limbs might be flaccid.

Any dog that has a longer back like a dachshund is prone to back injuries just because of the pure physics of it. Longer backs experience much more stress on their joints because they have to hold up more weight in the middle.

If you have a dog like this than you need to be extra cautious and keep them in great shape, and do not allow them to become obese, or allow them to jump a lot.  If possible it’s a good idea to get steps or ramps for a dog like this.
