Are bones safe for dogs is a common question that veterinarians get asked all the time. And usually the answer is generally no. This might seem counterintuitive to many pet owners since dogs love to chew on bones so much.
But after seeing several emergency cases of dogs and bones stuck in their intestines and requiring surgery it simply is not worth the risk giving your dog a bone to chew on.
If you do have to give your dog a bone try to get it something like a Nylabone or a rawhide chew even.
Some people try and make a distinction between the bones that have been cooked and raw bones. In general raw bones are a little bit safer than bones that have been cooked. Cooked bones tend to be more brittle and when they break, have sharper edges.
So if you insist on getting your dog a bone give a bone that has not been cooked or bake. But the best thing is not to give your dog any bones at all.
Remember emergency trips to the vet are expensive, and your dog enjoys many treats not just chewing on bones so give him something else that he enjoys chewing on.
Remember some dogs love to go through garbage cans so if you do have several bones or chicken wings in the garbage can, make sure you put them in a container that your dog can not get to.
So if you ask me, are bones safe for dogs? I will say no.
